Letter from the President

Dr. Samia Yaqub

Butte College is located on a 928 acre wildlife refuge nestled between beautiful buttes and agriculture and riparian landscapes.  Because of our location, we operate as a small city and have a tradition of environmental stewardship.  For example, on the main campus we supply our own water and maintain our own sewage disposal system, provide our own bus system and over the year, we produce approximately 90% of electricity we use.

As a college, we have pledged our commitment to help create a more sustainable campus and world. "Modeling Sustainability" is one of the six initiatives in our Strategic Plan and we have established a Board Policy on sustainability.  Additionally, we are a signatory of the Talloires Declaration and the President's Climate Commitment and are members in the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) and the American Council on Renewable Energy (ACORE).

You can find sustainability oriented projects and practices woven into our curriculum, in our facilities and operations, and in our student activity programming. To ensure that our efforts are coordinated, a cross section of faculty, staff, and student stakeholders from these sectors make-up our Sustainability Steering Committee that meets regularly throughout the year.  We are proud to share a chronology of past successes that the committee and campus stakeholders have initiated and accomplished over the past decade.

At Butte College, learning is at our core.  Thus, we aspire to stay informed of local and global environmental, social and economic issues so we can continually adapt our curriculum, programs, services and facilities to best respond to the needs of our current students, future generations and most importantly our planet.  We hope you will join us in this quest!
