Course Reserves for Students

What are course reserves? Can I borrow a textbook?

Course reserves are textbooks, articles and other supplemental reading materials that instructors place on hold at the library for their classes. Course reserve materials usually have a limited loan period to ensure availability to students in the class. The library does not purchase textbooks for the its collections. Textbooks are usually instructor copies placed on reserve. Course reserve materials can be the instructor's personal copy, a departmental copy or library materials.

Where is the reserve desk?

Main Campus Reserve desk is located at the entrance of the library building (LB), on the 2nd floor of the library.

Chico Center Library's Reserve desk is located in CHC 219.

How do I find the right book, video or article?

Reserves staff can help you find the right materials, just ask. Bring your syllabus or in your class notes so we get the right item, as there may be many editions of the same book, or videos and articles with similar titles.

There are also computers available to look up your course reserve materials at the reserve desk, or you can search from the library home page: Library → Course Reserves → Search Reserves. Search by course name, department or your instructor's name.

Who may borrow materials?

Reserve and other library materials can be checked out by currently enrolled Butte College students, and current faculty and staff (including emeritus faculty and staff). A valid photo ID is required to check out all library materials.

How long can I keep a reserve book? Can I take it home?

Reserve materials are available for limited loan set by the instructor, usually from 1 hour to 7 days. Some items may be checked out, but most reserve items, including videos, are available for in-library use only.

Holds, requests and renewals

You cannot place a hold on reserve materials, and they may not be renewed.

Book return

Please do not return reserve materials to any outside book drop. All reserve materials must be returned to the location where they were checked out - Main Campus Library Circulation & Reserve Desk or in Room 219 at the Chico Center.
