Future Development Strategy

Strategy 1

Find another program to link up with the TRiO SSS Program.

Initiatives
  • Inspiring passion through collaboration

  • Supporting Rationale
Finding another program to join with TRiO SSS might alleviate some of the funding issues.    We applied for the Veterans Upward Bound Grant, but did not get it.  We are currently collaborating with Yuba College on the College Bound Scholars grant and have awarded scholarships to local high school partners and Butte College TRiO and EOPS college students.  TRiO does not receive any money from Yuba College for participating in the College Bound Scholars program.

    Supporting Rationale Alignment
  • Maintaining core programs and services
  • Increasing student success
  • Strategy 2

Realize a Peer Mentoring program for new students.

    Initiatives
  • Inspiring passion through collaboration
  • Focusing on student success
  • Valuing a culture of learning

  • Supporting Rationale
The TRiO SSS grant would like to offer peer mentoring (this is still in progress) for new students during their first semester in the program.  TRiO looked into working with Title III and their mentoring program.  Title III was not a good fit for TRiO.  Peer Mentoring is a valuable tool that TRiO would like to try.  This could be accomplished by hiring 10 Peer Mentors that could work with new TRiO students entering the program.  These Peer Mentors would meet with the new students two times their first semester to discuss with them their progress, challenges, and use of student services.    As a college this would be a cohort that could be tracked for persistence and  retention.

    Supporting Rationale Alignment
  • Increasing student success
  • Strategy 3

Focus on Student Financial Literacy particularly budgeting, financial aid, loans, and credit cards.

    Initiatives
  • Focusing on student success
  • Valuing a culture of learning

  • Supporting Rationale
Focusing on Student Financial Literacy particularly budgeting, financial aid, loans, and credit cards are part of the focus of the TRiO SSS grant.  TRiO SSS has a Financial Aid workshop, a Scholarship workshop, and has students complete a budget each school year.

    Required Resources

TRiO SSS needs $5,440 to cover a 20 hour Student Assistant position.  The reason for the request is our TRiO Secretary position was eliminated due to not having enough funding to pay for the position.

TRiO SSS needs $1,000 to cover the cost of 10 Peer Mentors to work with new TRiO students during their first semester.  The reason for the request is that TRiO does not have any extra money in its budget to hire Peer Mentors.
