Three local high schools will vie for top honors in chemistry at Butte College Chemistry Days, Friday, April 26. The event takes place in the Physical Science Building on the main campus, 3536 Butte Campus Drive, Oroville.
Biggs High School, Inspire School of Arts and Sciences, and Chico High School will compete in their knowledge of basic chemistry, ability to name compounds, demonstration of laboratory skills, and solving a “chemical mystery.” More than 30 Butte College students have volunteered their time to organize and help out with the event.
While not competing, students will enjoy demonstrations in physics, geology, meteorology, and astronomy in the laboratory rooms, followed by lunch at 12:30. Physics department faculty will perform a death-defying nap on a bed of nails at 12:45, and the semifinals and final rounds of the “Chem Bowl” begin at 1 p.m. in Physical Science Room 131.
The day ends with the awards ceremony at 1:30 p.m. The top three teams in each event will earn certificates of achievement, and the winners in each event will receive a trophy for their school. The top school wins an overall trophy.
