Free ESL Prep Nights Offered for Spring 2013 Semester

Butte College is hosting two English as a Second Language (ESL) Prep Nights in January for students who intend to enroll in Spring 2013 ESL classes. The first Prep Night orientation will be held one week prior to the start of the Spring Semester on January 15 at the Chico Center, 2320 Forest Avenue, Room 237, from 5 to 8 p.m.

The second Prep Night orientation will be offered during the first week of spring semester classes on January 24 at the Chico Center, Room 231 from 5– 8 p.m.  During these orientations students will be able to take a tour, assess which ESL classes are appropriate for them as well as register and enroll in classes and receive their student identification cards. All classes and books for ESL students are free.

Among the non-credit classes offered by the college’s ESL program are ESL Levels 1 - 3, ESL Workforce Training and ESL Life Skills. Classes are offered at the Chico Center, Glenn County Center and the Community Employment Center. Not all classes are available at all locations.

The ESL Life Skills class (ESL 310) is an “open entry/open exit” class, giving students the opportunity to join, or leave, the class any time during the semester. The ESL program also offers a “Conversation Café,” a one-hour informal session during which students may practice their English conversational skills in a fun and relaxed environment.

Students enrolled in the program may also earn a noncredit certificate of competency in ESL.  This sequence of non-credit ESL courses takes students from survival skills to high intermediate language proficiency in preparation for their transition into credit-bearing ESL courses. Students will receive the foundational language proficiency necessary for various career pathways and general education courses.  This 102 hour certificate program can be completed in two academic semesters and requires the successful completion of at least two courses in the ESL sequence, one of which must be ESL 313.
