Butte College is planning a community thank you celebration and open house on Friday, May 20 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the main campus, 3536 Butte Campus Drive. The event will feature tours of the new buildings and projects funded by voters who approved Measure A – an $85 million bond measure in 2002.
“This event is our way of thanking the community who approved Measure A which allowed Butte College to build new facilities and renovate existing buildings. As a result, four new buildings were constructed and several others were renovated. Many of our students were taking classes in 40 year old portable trailers. With the Measure A funding, we were able to leverage additional funding through the state to complete all promised projects. These projects utilized local contractors which also benefited our local economy,” said Dr. Diana Van Der Ploeg, Butte College president.
The projects funded by the bond measure include the Chico Center, Learning Resource Center, Library Renovation, ARTS building, Student and Administrative Services building, Campus Center renovation, and Fire/Police Training Area Upgrades. Two of the buildings are certified Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold by the U.S. Green Building Council. The ARTS facility was the first LEED Gold college building in the North State. All Measure A projects have been completed on time and within budget.
“Our students now have access to state-of-the-art facilities with instructional labs, classrooms and a Center for Academic Success-- which offers students free computer labs, tutoring services and workshops. We’re grateful to the voters who have helped Butte College leap from decades old facilities into state-of-the-art labs and classrooms,” said Dr. Diana Van Der Ploeg, Butte College president.
The free event kicks off inside the new ARTS building’s black box theater at 11 a.m. with a welcome by Dr. Diana Van Der Ploeg along with tours of the new facilities. Tours of the college’s buildings and solar projects will be available along with music, a plant sale, Student Art Studios Tour, food booths, career booths, refreshments, and the new Roadrunner mascot.
