Heidi Dearborn, a music instructor at Butte College, was recently honored as the 2010 Band Soldier of the Year by the National Army Guard.
SPC Dearborn is a flutist with the reserve’s Det. 1 40th ID (59th Army) Band in Sacramento.
"This is a great honor for me and the 59th Army Band," said Dearborn.
Dearborn, who received her master’s degree in music from CSU, Chico in 2006 joined Butte College following her graduation and enlisted in the reserves in 2009. She teaches both music appreciation and American popular music and leads the Children’s Choir of Chico kindergarten and third grade choirs.
"I love working with the diverse population of students at Butte College, including returning veterans," she said.
Dearborn’s husband, Michael Cory, a music teacher in the Williams Union School District, was honored as the 2009 Band Soldier of the Year.
Dearborn traveled to the Army School of Virginia to receive a medal of commendation.
