Butte College Instructor of Building Inspection Technology Yvonne Christopher is the first woman to receive the Sacramento Valley Association of Building Officials (SVABO) prestigious “Porcelain Pony” Award.
“I feel honored to have been recognized by my peers,” said Christopher, who has been a SVABO member since 1987.
Each year SVABO, a chapter of the International Code Council, honors its exemplary members for their dedicated work and contributions to building code enforcement and building safety in the Sacramento Valley. Christopher was one of only seven members among the association’s 200 members to be honored.
The Porcelain Pony award was presented to Christopher for her many years of dedicated service to SVABO, its growth and the professional building inspection industry. Throughout her tenure as a SVABO member Christopher has served on the association’s Board of Directors, numerous committees as well as co-developed the group’s building code education program.
Prior to becoming a faculty member at the college, Christopher served as the Director of Planning and Building Services for Butte County from 2002 to 2005, a position she took after serving as a building official in Monterey County from 1995 to 2002.
Upon accepting the teaching position at Butte College, Christopher created a committee of past SVABO presidents to serve as an advisory board for the college’s Building Inspection Technology program.
The Butte College Building Inspection Technology program trains students to become building inspectors, plans examiners, counter technicians and home inspectors. The BIT program has prepared hundreds of students over the past 30 years, impacting the industry at large across the nation.
SVABO is a professional organization which promotes effective building codes and enforced uniformity to create safer built environments. For more than 50 years SVABO has strived to provide its members, associates and the public with the latest developments in building safety from local, state, national and international perspectives.
