The Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1985 (COBRA) requires the District offer employees and their families the opportunity for extension of health coverage at group rates in certain instances where coverage under the Butte Schools Self-Funded Program would otherwise end. Qualifying events include such things as voluntary or involuntary termination of employment for reasons other than gross misconduct, reduction in the number of hours of employment, loss of dependent status, marital dissolution or termination of a domestic partnership. Coverage under COBRA would continue 18 months or 36 months depending on the qualifying event.
The option to pick up benefits under COBRA must be requested within 60 days of the loss of benefits. It is the employee's responsibility to notify Human Resources in the event of a marital dissolution or termination of a domestic partnership.
