Reducing heart disease risk factors via diet, lifestyle modification to lose weight and reduce diabetes, and osteoporosis prevention.

Personal Information

Maggi grew up on a cattle ranch in eastern Oregon. She went to college in Oregon and Colorado. She has worked as a clinical dietitian in both the hospital and out-patient setting. Maggi has also taught weight loss classes, nutrition to culinary students and diabetes education in a physician's office. While teaching at Butte, she has worked for Enloe doing cardiac rehab nutrition classes and diabetes education. Maggi has three children; Katelyn, Maureen, and Alex, who keep her very busy when she isn't teaching!

Career Experience

Instructor, Butte College (Jan 1993-present): Instructor of basic nutrition and diet therapy classes. Effective classroom management and curriculum development. Teaching methods include Internet evaluation, Web CT, and computerized diet evaluation

Nutrition Consultant-Long Term Care, HM Composite (Sept 1995-Dec 1996): Nutrition assessment and car planning for residents in long-term health care facilities. Monitor food service department and provide staff education and in-service training.

Consulting Nutritionist, Butte Senior Nutrition Program (Jan 1993-Dec 1996): Analyze and make recommendations concerning the food service for Congregate and home-delivery meal programs. Provide oreintation, training and supervision of food service staff on food storage and safety. Evaluate nutritional adequacy of menus and assist in long term menu planning.

Diabetes Nutritionist-Diabetes Wellness Center (Oct 1990-July 1992): Individual nutrition education for Diabetes (insulin and non insulin dependent) and Gestational Diabetes. Instruct patients on self blood glucose monitoring. Public seminars on various nurition topics (Osteoporosis, Hyperlipidemia). Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE), 1992-1997

Out-Patient Dietitian - St. Vincent Hospital (March 1987-July 1990): Individual consultation on wide variety of clinical nutrition diets, with emphasis on diabetes, hyperlipidemia and weight management. Developed 12 week Weight Management program which increase out-patient revenue by 65% at St. Vincent Hosptal. Group teaching of nutrition classes for cardiac rehab, alcohol and chemical dependency and arthritis self-management. Educational material development and writing for lay health publications.

Weight Management Dietitian - Kaiser Permanente (May 1986-July 1990) Sacred Heart Hospital (Jan 1991-Jun 1992): Facilitated group nutrition education classes which emphaszed behavior modification and lifestyle adjustment (Freedom from Fat and Lifesteps). Co-leader for liquid protein diet pilot program (Kaiser from April 1989-July 1990).

Nutrition Instructor - Western Culinary Institute (Dec 1988-Aug 1989): Taught nutrition course to advanced culinary students with emphasis given to developing healthier cooking skills (less fat, salt and sugar). Designed nutrition course curriculum.

Research Dietitian - Kaiser Center for Health Research (Aug 1987-Jun 1989): Involved in initial nutrition assessment and evaluation for two multi-center research projects (DISC-Dietary Intervention Study in Children and TOHP-Trials for Hypertension Prevention). Certified for nutrition interviews in research setting by Tufts Medical School and the Nutrition Coding Center in the University of Minnesota.

Clinical Dietitian - St. Vincent Hospital (June 1983-Mar 1986): Nutrition counseling, assessment and education of medical, orthopedic, renal and surgical patients. Involvement with Nutrition Support Subcommittee and established enteral bid buying protocol. Development of hospital menu and conducted inservice for medical and nursing staff on new menu.
