Each year at the conclusion of the Spring semester Butte College holds a Commencement Ceremony for the year's graduates and candidates. Graduates or candidates for an Associate Degree to be awarded by Butte College are cordially invited to participate in this memorable occasion scheduled to begin at 7:00 pm on Friday, May 30, 2014. The ceremony will be held at the John B. Cowan football stadium on the main campus.
Following the ceremony, participants and their guests are invited to enjoy refreshments and music provided by the Amy Celeste Band at the informal reception held on the south side of the gymnasium. At this celebration, graduates may be able to introduce family members to those faculty and/or staff who played a significant role in their years at Butte, take keepsake photos for their memory books, and get that last picture of the school mascot, Dash.
If you believe you are eligible for graduation, you need to meet with your counselor for a graduation check and to complete an Application for Graduation no later than Thursday, March 27, 2014.
Additionally, if you plan to participate in the ceremony, please complete and return the Commencement Participation card included in the Commencement Ceremony invitation letter you will receive after you have completed the Application for Graduation and meet the graduation requirements. Return this card as soon as it is received to the Office of the Vice President for Student Services located on the bottom floor of the Campus Center (CC 141). The guest speaker for this year's ceremony will be a student chosen from the ranks of graduates and candidates. If you plan to compete for the honor of being guest speaker, please return the Commencement Participation card and a copy of your speech to the Office of the Vice President for Student Services (CC 141) no later than noon on Friday, April 25, 2014. The speech should be no longer than seven minutes in length and may be of any topic you choose. A Selection Committee made up of faculty and staff will use appropriateness of topic, conciseness of thought, and presentation of speech as criteria for selection. You will be notified of the audition date(s) after turning in your Participation card, and notified as to who was selected soon after the audition.
A student will also be chosen from the ranks of graduates and candidates to sing the National Anthem. If you would like to audition to sing the National Anthem, please indicate as such on the Commencement Participation Card and return it to the Office of the Vice President for Student Services (CC 141) no later than noon on Friday, April 25, 2014. The criteria the committee will use to select the vocalist is: 1)melody/pitch, 2)vocal quality, 3)volume/clarity, 4)style/interpretation, and 5)overall performance/confidence. You will be notified of the audition date(s) after turning in your Participation card, and notified as to who was selected soon after the audition.
Graduation gowns, caps, and tassels are mandatory, and are available for purchase at the College Bookstore through the evening of graduation. Honor cords will be provided to those graduates who have met the GPA requirements free of charge. The cost of purchasing Commencement attire will be approximately $30.00. Phi Theta Kappa stoles are available for a purchase price of $20.00 at the Phi Theta Kappa Advisor's Office. Phi Theta Kappa stoles are also available for loan the evening of the commencement ceremony.
Graduation announcements may be purchased in the Bookstore, and name cards should be available for special order.
Disabled and elderly accommodations are available: Parking, seating, sign language interpreters, and courtesy carts (flag one down as they roam the parking lot) to assist in the transport of those who may need a ride from the parking lot to the football field.Congratulations on your graduation from Butte College and we wish you all the best in your future endeavors!
